To adequately define physical items, additional attributes and lookup table values must be defined beforehand. The following tasks are recommended:

For administrators:

1. Define a list of units of measure (System Admin > Maintain List Values > Units of Measure)
2. Define a classification structure with related user-defined attributes (item characteristics)
3. Define a list of physical item types (System Admin > Maintain List Values > Physical Item Type)
4. Optionally define cross reference types (System Admin > Maintain List Values > Cross Reference Type)
5. Define product structure types for physical item structuring - lists.
6. Define related organizations for vendor or responsibility definition

See Maintaining List Values for details. If a system generated physical item number is required, an appropriate numbering mask must be defined in the System Defaults.

For users:

1. To create physical items, you must have the New Object Instances > Physical Item permission.
